Crayfish Monitoring Workshop

July 12, 2011

Vermont state biologists are seeking help to document the presence of two non-native crayfish species in the White River. On Thursday and Friday, July 21 and 22, the WRP and Jennifer Guarino are teaming up to offer a free Crayfish Monitoring Workshop to train interested teachers and community volunteers how to monitor crayfish in the White River and its tributaries.

Garlic mustard pull event

State law combats spread of didymo

February 21, 2011

In an effort to curb the spread of aquatic invasive species in Vermont rivers, the Vermont legislature has enacted, and the Governor signed into law, a ban on use of felt-soled waders in Vermont waters effective April 1, 2011.

WRP to host first Landscape Auction in USA

May 21, 2010

The WRP will host the first Landscape Auction in the United States on August 14, 2010 at Vermont Technical College in Randolph Center, VT. The WRP received grant funding from the USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service and Forest Service to pilot this new market mechanism in partnership with Triple E, a Dutch consulting firm.

Didymo bloom found in Bethel

June 19, 2008

State biologists confirmed a didymo bloom on Locust Creek today, the first bloom found on a tributary of the White River. Didymo may be seen growing on rocks from the mouth of Locust Creek up to the first bridge on Old Route 12.

Didymo found in White River

July 16, 2007

An invasive algae, called “didymo” or “rock snot,” has been found on the White River. According to state biologists, the didymo algae has been confirmed on the mainstem between Stony Brook in Stockbridge and Cleveland Brook in Bethel. The White River Partnership is working with the state biologists and a number of other organizations, including Trout Unlimited and the Connecticut River Watershed Council, to educate the public about stopping the spread of the didymo algae within and beyond the White River watershed.

Water Quality Monitoring Begins

June 26, 2007

In June, the White River Partnership (WRP) launched its seventh season of monitoring the water quality of streams and rivers throughout the White River watershed in central Vermont. Twenty-two dedicated volunteers are keeping tabs on 26 sites throughout the watershed, measuring water temperature, clarity, and electrical conductivity (a measure of dissolved salts), and also collecting water samples that are tested for E. coli at the WRP’s Rochester office.

Mongolia Watershed Presentation

Ayers Brook 101

In December 2006, the WRP hosted a kick-off public meeting for the Ayers Brook Corridor Planning Project (Project). Funded by a grant from the UVCF’s Upper Connecticut River Mitigation and Enhancement Fund, the Project goal is to work with the communities of Brookfield, Braintree, and Randolph to develop a comprehensive management plan that will effectively restore Ayers Brook.

2006 Water Quality Monitoring Program

The sixth season of our Water Quality Monitoring program is officially complete. Launched in 2001, the program goal is to better understand potential threats to water quality and public health by keeping tabs at 24 sites throughout the watershed, including popular swimming holes and locations that have the potential to become contaminated.
